Vascular Capacity (Tau) measures how elastic and responsive your blood vessel walls are — how quickly they expand to absorb the pressure wave from each heartbeat and spring back. Healthy, elastic vessels cushion each heartbeat like new rubber tubing. Stiff vessels transmit pressure directly through the circulatory system, forcing the heart to work harder and increasing the risk of hypertension and heart strain. Arterial stiffness is one of the most predictive markers of cardiovascular age.

How Vsense measures it
Vsense derives Vascular Capacity from pulse wave analysis in the rPPG signal — measuring the time constant (Tau) of the pressure decay between heartbeats. A longer tau means vessels absorb and release pressure more slowly and elastically.
How it's scored
Above 1.78 s: Good — arteries are responding elastically and cushioning heartbeats well. 1.12–1.77 s: Moderate — some arterial stiffness present. Below 1.12 s: Reduced vascular elasticity — blood vessels are transmitting pressure less effectively.
What a high reading means
Higher Tau (vascular capacity) is better. It means your vessels are elastic and absorbing pressure waves efficiently — reducing the load on your heart and protecting smaller blood vessels throughout the body. Athletes and people with low cardiovascular risk tend to have higher Tau.
What a low reading means
Low Tau indicates arterial stiffness — blood vessel walls are less elastic and don't absorb pressure waves as effectively. This increases systolic blood pressure, forces the heart to work harder, and damages smaller downstream vessels. Arterial stiffness increases with age, but lifestyle factors accelerate or slow this process.

Can arterial stiffness be reversed?
Yes, partially. Lifestyle changes — especially aerobic exercise, quitting smoking, and optimising diet — can improve arterial elasticity even in older adults. Exercise has the strongest and most consistent evidence. Full reversal of advanced stiffening is not possible, but progression can be stopped and partly reversed.
How is vascular capacity related to blood pressure?
Stiffer arteries transmit more pressure per heartbeat — raising systolic blood pressure. This is why isolated systolic hypertension (high top number, normal bottom number) becomes more common with age: the vessels lose their cushioning capacity.
Does stress affect vascular capacity?
