Heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute. It's one of the most fundamental indicators of cardiovascular health and overall physical condition. Your resting heart rate reflects how efficiently your heart pumps blood throughout your body. Well-trained athletes often have resting rates of 40–55 bpm — the lower the rate, the more efficiently the heart works.

How it's scored

A resting heart rate of 60–80 bpm is optimal for most adults. Athletes often have rates between 40–60 bpm, which is a sign of excellent cardiovascular efficiency. Above 100 bpm at rest is tachycardia; below 60 is bradycardia.

What a high reading means

A resting heart rate above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. It can be caused by stress, dehydration, caffeine, anemia, infection, thyroid issues, or cardiovascular strain. Occasional elevation after activity or excitement is normal. Persistent elevation warrants medical attention.

What a low reading means

A resting heart rate below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. In athletes and highly fit individuals, this is completely normal and desirable. In non-athletes, if accompanied by dizziness, fatigue, or fainting, it may need medical evaluation.

How to improve it

Exercise
